What are the Chemical features of ABS polymer?

ABS is synthesized from three chemical monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. (Each monomer has different characteristics: acrylonitrile has high strength, thermal stability, and chemical stability; butadiene has a toughness and impact resistance; styrene has easy processing, high gloss, and high strength.

Polymerization of the three monomers resulted in a terpolymer with two phases, one was a continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile, and the other was a polybutadiene rubber dispersed phase. From the morphological point of view, ABS is a non-crystalline material with high mechanical strength and good comprehensive properties of “tough, tough and steel”. It is a general-purpose engineering plastic being widely used. Low shrinkage (0.60%), stable shape building, and it is easy to form and process.

The characteristics of ABS mainly depend on the ratio of the three monomers and the molecular structure in the two phases. It allows great flexibility in product design, and thus produces hundreds of different types of ABS profiles on the market.  These different grades of ABS resin provide different characteristics, such as from moderate to high impact resistance, from low to high finish and high-temperature distortion characteristics. ABS material has super easy processability, appearance characteristics, low creep, and excellent dimensional stability,

ABS is light yellow granular or bead opaque resin, non-toxic, odorless, low water absorption, and has good comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, such as excellent electrical properties, abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and surface gloss. ABS Extruding process characteristics

1, ABS has a large hygroscopicity and moisture sensitivity. Before molding, it must be fully dried and preheated (at least 2 hours at 80 ~ 90C) to control the moisture content below 0.03%.

2, ABS resin’s melt viscosity is less sensitive to temperature (different from other amorphous resins).
It can increase the fluidity by increasing the screw speed or injection pressure. The general processing temperature is preferably 190-235 ° C.

3, ABS melt viscosity is medium, higher than PS, HIPS, AS are higher, need to use a higher injection pressure (500 ~ 1000bar) beer cargo.

4, ABS materials using medium and high-speed injection speed beer cargo effect is better. (Unless the shape is complex and thin-walled parts require a higher injection speed), the product’s water level is prone to air marks.

5, ABS molding temperature is relatively high, its mold temperature is generally adjusted at 25-70 ℃. When producing larger products, the temperature of the fixed mold (front mold) is generally slightly higher than the movable mold (rear mold) by about 5 ° C. (The mold temperature will affect the finish of the plastic part, and the lower temperature will result in a lower finish).

6, ABS should not stay in the high-temperature barrel for too long (it should be less than 30 minutes), otherwise, it will easily decompose and yellow.  In addition to ABS resin, there are many other plastic products such as acrylic lampshades, PVC profiles, PC profiles, etc.
